Keep the Pace

Walking up to 3 miles per day at a moderate pace of 2 mph over uneven terrain. Standing up to 2.5 hours per day. Program will require approximately 25 miles of walking over 22 days. Must be able to use stairs, often without handrails, to navigate field trip sites. Must be able to handle own luggage at some train stations where porters are unavailable or not permitted entrance, including on escalators. Due to unavoidable stairs, wheelchairs and scooters cannot be accommodated on this program. Must be physically capable of participating in all planned program activities.

Activity Level
Keep the Pace
I like to spend much of the day exploring. Whether walking through historic neighborhoods at a moderate pace or out and about on a coach, I prefer to keep my days full. Stairs don’t bother me, and I love to keep up with the group.

Best of all, you’ll…

  • Share lunch with a Beijing courtyard family, then enter the Forbidden City, the former seat of emperors and once forbidden to all others.
  • Enjoy close glimpses of China’s colorful country life from your train carriage and from high-speed bullet trains.
  • Discover hidden hillside villages and lush landscapes of the Guizhou province.

General Notes

No overnight trains; all train travel during daylight hours. Optional tai ji and Chinese conversation. Some sites have uneven terrain, unpaved paths, cobblestones, uneven or steep steps with no railings. Group leaders are full-time staff, university graduates fluent in English.
